How to Make Your Small Space Seem So Much Bigger

Young adults often face the problem of getting stuck in a small living space, especially when their bank accounts don’t let them rent a bigger apartment. However, living in a small space isn’t so bad at all. In fact, you can make your tiny apartment appear more spacious with these super simple tricks. For this article, I’m going to show you how to make a small space seem bigger.

How to Make the Most of Your Small Living Space

  1. Choose light colors

Light colors for your walls, furniture, and ceilings can make your apartment twice as big, as opposed to dark and dim colors. Pale and light colors can let your room “breathe” and appear much spacious than it actually is. The reason for this is that pale colors like cream, beige, or white can reflect natural light, making your space appear larger.

On the other hand, darker paint absorbs light and makes a room seem cramped. If you have a small apartment, I suggest starting off with basic pastels or light shades, and partner this tip with unobstructed windows to let in as much natural light as possible.

Furthermore, if you want to go for wallpapers, I suggest choosing a style that consists of light colors as well. Darker and bolder patterns cannot be good for small spaces, so make sure that you choose pastel or light styles.

  1. Opt for multi-functional furniture

Innovative furniture companies nowadays offer a much more convenient option for people living in small spaces. For example, some couches can double as a day bed, while some can also function as a desk for a mini-office. Using furniture like these will definitely free up more space, as opposed to using individual pieces of furniture.

While on the subject on furniture, I also recommend that you stray from big or chunky pieces, such as grandma sofas and oversized coffee tables. Let’s think “minimal” here, because we don’t have much space to spare.

  1. Choose smart storage

Another neat trick to minimize the space you need is to select furniture that doubles as a storage vessel. On this endeavor, choose furniture, such as coffee tables or beds, which have drawers or some kind of storage area for you to use. In this way, we can lessen the need for multiple dressers or shelves.

If you’re trying to lessen clutter and use up more of your existing space, look around the room for possible storage places. On top of the dresser, underneath the bed, on a console table; the possibilities are endless! However, be careful as to not clutter too much. The keyword here is “minimalist”, and while we’re looking for smart places to store our stuff, we don’t want our space to appear too messy.

  1. Use mirrors

The use of mirrors as a space-widening tactic is one of the oldest and most effective tricks in the book. Do you have an available space on a wall? Install a mirror and add depth to your room (the bigger, the better!).

The best option for smaller apartments are, of course, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, but if this is not possible, smaller framed mirrors will do. However, the placement will matter. I recommend placing these mirrors wherein they will reflect natural light. This way, they can make your space appear bigger than it actually is.

Hint: You can also make this a fun DIY project and use a good corded drill to do the work.

  1. Utilize your wall

If you have a small space, we want to free up the floor as much as possible. Not only to make our room seem bigger, but to also lessen clutter.

A good tip is to use your walls for shelving. A great shelving system will allow you to organize your stuff (and keep them off the floor), while letting you decorate to your heart’s content.

If you’re going to install shelves, it’s also wise to build them around your bed or TV. In this way, you’re going to save so much space while also adding style to your room. So go get your hammer and start working!

  1. Avoid multiple art pieces

Use of multiple, small art pieces can make the room cramped and overwhelming. A classier, and much wiser option is to choose one big piece of art to hang on a single wall. A big canvas in a small room can add more space and color, while focusing all the attention on one space rather than overwhelming you with multiple colors and pieces.

On this note, choosing a minimalist painting can also make your room more simple and spacious.

  1. Avoid overdecorating

The biggest mistake you can make when decorating a small apartment is overdoing it. Yes, we want our homes to look nice, but putting too much décor in our space can make it seem cramped and overcrowded.

If you can help it, the best trick to create the illusion of space is minimal decorations. On this note, why not make it a simple as you can, too?

The best tip for decorating a small space is to use single, stand-alone pieces. Perhaps a classy centerpiece for the dining table, a planter for the coffee table, or a single vase for the end table? The possibilities are endless; just make sure you don’t overdo it.
