What Should an Interior Decorator Cost?

If you’re thinking about hiring an interior decorator to make your home look better in terms of aesthetics, you probably know it’s going to come with a price tag.  How much, you may be asking?  Let’s take a look…

How much does it cost?

The fee for hiring an interior decorator varies.  On average, the hourly rate may range from $50 to $500. You can negotiate for a flat fee with the decorator which will depend on your haggling skills. The fee can range for a few hundred dollars per project to several thousand dollars. There is also a possibility to pay for retainer before the project begins.

There are interior decorators that charge 30 to 35 percent commission on items that they will purchase for the clients.  There are interior decorators that charge by the area of the project.  Some decorators, for example, could charge around $6 per square foot. This scheme is often used if the decorator would be tasked to work on commercial or tourism industry projects like hotels, restaurants or beach resorts.

What are they going to do for me?

When you hire an interior decorator you will be working with an artist that has a fundamental idea of the aesthetics of your home and how to capture it. Often they would make a survey of the area and will also give you a design plan for the decorations. It could be a mock-up, a diorama or a sketch plan of the designs of the room. Next they would give you rough estimates of the cost of the materials to bring beauty into the place. It is best to have a look at the portfolio of their past works to give you an idea of the capability of your decorator that you wish to hire.

What are the extra costs to think about?

Extra costs often come in the form of retainers that most decorators would be asking before starting the project. However, this may not apply for residential projects. Most commercial or hospitality projects do need a decorator on retainer. Remember that an interior decorator is only going to help draw up plans and shop with you. Purchasing the furniture, accessories and other things for the home is going to come at an additional cost.  While most designers are more than happy to shop with you, keep in mind that some will charge a travel fee if they have to meet you there, etc.

Most reputable designers out there will be more than happy to offer you a free consultation before they begin their work.
