Shopping for Replacements: Different Window Styles to Consider Home Decoration Home Furniture Home Improvement by BJ Stucki - January 6, 2016January 6, 2016 Shopping for Replacements: Different Window Styles to Consider Looking to install new windows in your home? Just like roofing and siding, windows come in a variety of styles, each with their own strong points. To make the most out of getting new windows, however, it is important that you choose the right one. There are different factors to consider when choosing a window but understanding what each option has to offer is a good way to start the selection process. Bay Windows Image – www.rbadesmoines.com Bay windows are well known for their three-sided design featuring one big panel flanked by two smaller ones. The configuration results in an angled layout that provides generous views of the outdoors and ample amount of natural lighting. Because the window angles out, it extends floor space, which helps give the illusion of space. The bay window is a great choice if you’re looking for replacements for your living room or bedroom. Bow Windows The bow window is usually confused with the bay window because they share the same general configuration of having multiple window panels. The bow window is different from a bay window in that it features four or five panels while a bay has three. Like the bay window, however, a bow window is a great addition to living rooms and bedrooms. It usually doesn’t include muntins so it has unobstructed glass areas and can be opened at an angle to direct airflow into the home. A casement window can also be operated with one hand so it is ideal for areas with tight spaces or requiring reaching over, such as over counters in kitchens. It is so popular, in fact, that it is likely that your old windows are double hungs. This particular window style features two moving sashes that operate by sliding up or down and are kept in place by springs and balances. Slide the bottom sash up and you can also make room for an air conditioning unit. Because a double hung window boasts of a timeless design, it works well with a lot of architectural styles. Depending on the window configuration chosen, a sliding window may have one or two operable sashes that slide along roller on a track or rail. As it is minimalist in design, a sliding window complements modern home styles the most. Picture Windows A picture window is called as such because of its great ability to frame picturesque views outdoors. It also referred to as a fixed window because it is inoperable. It can’t be opened so it can’t contribute to improving ventilation in a home but what it lacks in that department it makes up for in offering incredible insulation. As a picture window has no moving parts, it remains sealed throughout, keeping air leakages to a minimum. Custom Windows When the usual window style won’t do, a custom window can address your needs by offering a wide range of shapes and sizes to cater to homeowner preferences. Because of its unique appearance, a custom window is usually turned into a focal point for the home. Depending on your preferences, it can either be complemented by other more traditionally styled windows or installed on its own. Whatever window you choose, make sure that you work with a professional installer. On their own, windows offer benefits, but you will enjoy them much longer when they are installed right.
